CM instructs use of pumps for irrigation

With the potential prospect of drought looming in the State, the Chief Minister has ordered water pumps to be used to channel water to the fields for necessary irrigation purposes and to avert drought conditions.
According to an official source, a meeting chaired by the Chief Minister was held at the CM Secretariat today which was participated by officials of Horticulture, Agriculture, Water Resources, MI and PHED and during the meeting, the CM directed the officials to do the needful to avert drought in the State.
As soon as the meeting wrapped up, the officials began making necessary arrangements to purchase the pump sets, the source added.
Pointing out the possibility of a drought, the source mentioned that around 45,601 hectares of farm lands are facing acute lack of water right now.
The source continued that steps have been taken up to form district level committee with necessary Department officials and added that till date, the rate of rainfall is around 34 percent short of the normal rainfall.
The normal rainfall of the State is usually 1465 mm.
However, till September, therate of rainfall in Manipur remained at 1186.1 mm.
To manage the potential lack of water in the near future, the Chief Minister also instructed the authorities concerned to make necessary arrangements for channelling water from the lakes and rivers, the source added.
