Ukhrul, April 08 2017:
Northern Raiphei Students' Union (NRSU) president R Zimik has decried the deplorable condition of electricity in the villages of Raiphei area which is situated at the extreme north of Ukhrul district.
Speaking to media persons, he stated that in 1990, the Electricity Department erected the electric poles and wirings but they came to nought, adding they installed defunct machinery at the Namrei substation.
No staff were posted at the 33/11 KV power substation, he added.
A total of 14 villages which comprised the Raiphei area have been completely deprived of electricity for a long time, reports our correspondent.
Secretary of NRSU stated that presently, the villagers burn pine woods as an alternative source of light apart from candles or solar light.
He further stated that in 2013, 33/11 KV Namrei power substation was inaugurated for providing power supply to the whole villages but one MVA out of two installed short circuted the same day.
NRSU has repeatedly urged the district DGM, MSPDL to look into the grievances of the people adding the State Government's lack of interest has brought despair to the villagers.
Although verbal assurance were made to install an MVA at Namrei substation at the earliest, no action has been taken up by the authority concerned.
NRSU strongly urged the State Government to upgrade the Namrei power sub- station and install a 3.15 MVA capacity or provide a temporary connection to Kharasom through dedicated HT lines from Jessami's 33/11 KV power substation.
NRSU is also prepared to launch intense agitation to show their discontentment against the State Government.
