Many socio-voluntary and student organisations condoling the untimely demise of the MEELAL leader Chingsubam Akaba condemned the killing of the public figure and demanded stringent punishment against the assailants.
Ch Akaba was shot dead by two unidentified persons on the intervening night of December 31, 2006 and January 1, 2007 near his Soibam Leikai Mary Leirak residence after he had escorted his driver from the same locality at around 12.15 am of January 1.According to information culled by the press, the assailants came in a Maruti car with one of the two persons grabbing Akaba and the other firing two shots at close range even as some suspected accomplices stayed vigil near the crime site.
The victims died on the spot after suffering bullet wounds on the chest and head areas.
After post mortem at RIMS morgue the body was brought in a procession to the MPP office yesterday where wreath were laid by the MPP president Dr L Chandramani and party MLAs Dr Nimaichand Luwang and O Joy, and other functionaries.
the mortal remains was also kept momentarily at the Sanamahi Temple complex of 1st MR and Palace Compound before the procession winded up at Soibam Leikai where religious rituals and obeisances are being held.
As desired by the departed leader, Akaba's body would be laid to rest at the Baruni hills tomorrow with the funeral procession slated from the Citizens' Club premise slated to begin from 7 am.
