International Volunteer Day celebrated

All Manipur NGOs forum, Imphal joined in the observance of the 27th international Volunteer Day with a commemorative function held today at the Wangkhei Ningthem Pukhri Mapal conference hall of MVHA.
As chief guest of the event, Yaiskul AC MLA E Chand expressed that celebration of international volunteer day is a fitting tribute to all the volunteers who had been working with dedication and valour for the overall wellbeing of human kind.
He also exuded confidence that members of NGOs operating in Manipur could bring positive changes in the society if they work with the spirit of sacrifice.
According to Forum president Y Surchandra, the United Nations General Assembly held in 1985 set aside December 5 as the International Volunteer Day and from the next year the observance is being held every year throughout the world.
From welfare activities at the rural pockets to joining rescue works at calamity-hit city locations, responsibilities and roles of the volunteers are multi-pronged, said Surchandra while adding that the volunteers are also actively involved in solving social problems, curbing spread of serious diseases and in protecting human rights.
As a part of the observance, (late) Jibankumar Laishram of Soibam Leikai Ayangpali and (late) Aribam Devidas Sharma of Bachaspati leikai Brahmapur Nahabam were honoured posthumously for their contributions towards development and welfare of volunteers/NGOs.
Ch Pishakmacha Devi of Sagolband Thingnam Leikai was also awarded on the occasion.
Manipur State Commission for Protection of Child Rights Chairperson A Nabachandra also attended the observance as the guest of honour.
