Imphal, August 28 2010:
Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh and MPCC president Gaikhangam will be the proposers in the re-election of Congress chief Sonia Gandhi even as the Congress Bhavan (BT Road) today hosted a meeting of Congress MLAs elected from within the Imphal Municipal Council areas to discuss on the six month suspension of the Council.
A congress party source said O Ibobi and Gaikhangam have been intimated to reach the national capital on September 1 in connection with the AICC election scheduled for September 17 .
Both have been asked to be present as proposers when Sonia Gandhi files her nomination papers on September 2 for re-election as president of the national political party, which is heading the UPA alliance at the Centre.
Regarding the meeting related to suspension of IMC it is said that Gaikhangam presided the session which was attended by Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Minister Y Erabot, MLA L Nandakumar, Education Minister L Jayentakumar, PDA Chairman Dr Kh Loken as well as MPCC vice president and general secretaries.
The meeting besides taking stock of the situation arising out of suspension of IMC for six months also stressed on the need for constant interaction between the IMC councillors and MLAs concerned so as to iron out differences, if any.
While emphasise was on sustaining activities associated with the Imphal Municipal Council the meeting also decided to entrust MPCC president Gaikhangam discuss the issue with the Chief Minister for an early solution to the impasse.
It may be noted that IMC Councillors, including several from the Congress party have voiced opposition on the SPF Government's contention that financial irregularities constrained suspension of the Council.
The Congress party Councillors, in particular, had construed suspension of the Council as subjugation of their political career especially in view of the fact that the suspension order was passed only nine months before end of the Council's term.
