Memo submitted to Minister by Zeliangrong Students' Union Manipur (ZSUM)

Zeliangrong Students' Union Manipur (ZSUM) submitted a memorandum to the Education Minister demanding re-engagement/extension of service for the teachers appointed on contract basis in the six hill districts of Manipur.
The memorandum reminded the Minister that physical verification with relevant documents for the re-engagement/extension of the teachers appointed on contract basis in the hill schools under Directorate of Education (S) was initiated subsequent to the decision arrived in the meeting of the teachers' representatives and the Government held at the office chamber of the Principal Secretary, Education (S) on September 21, 2011 .
It added that in due process, 772 teachers appointed on contract basis in the hill schools under Directorate of Education (S) 2006 had been verified as genuine and the concerned department recommended the same for a period of atleast one full academic year at the first instance to the higher authority.
The engagement of the contract teachers were not made on the basis of vacancies but on the basis of need and requirement, it added.
The memorandum further said that it has been ascertained from the official reports submitted on August 5, 2011 to higher authorities by the office of Additional Director, Education (S) Hills that there is acute shortage of 2152 teachers in the six hills districts at present.
It is must be mentioned that the teachers were engaged on a meagre remuneration of Rs 4000 and Rs 3500 .
In view of all these past developments, the memorandum urged the Minister to take up initiatives which may ease the suffering of the teachers.
