Imphal, May 21 2011:
Founders, former Principals and Union of Social Upliftment have opposed shifting of Modern College from its current location at Porompat to another place.
It may be mentioned that the State Cabinet in a meeting held on May 12 last decided to expand the complex of Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) by acquiring the campus of Modern College.
It also decided to shift the college to the land where Imphal East Police Station was earlier located.
Speaking to reporters in a press conference held at the office of Union of Social Upliftment, Lamlong, union president Moirangthem Bimananda pleaded the Government to equally upgrade both Modern College and JNIMS instead of shifting the 48-year-old college from its original location.
Ridiculing the decision of the Government, he asked how a college having a campus of 16.18 acres be shifted to a place of only 3 acres.
Bimananda added that JNIMS has already expanded its complex from 16 acres to 86 acres after it has been upgraded to the status of a medical institute.
He added, according to the guidelines of the Medical Council of India, the minimum area of a medical college must be 25 acres.
Bimananda also said that it is not mandatory for any medical college to have the hostels inside its campus if it is located at a distance of 10 minutes' journey.
Taking part at the press conference, former Principal Dr Thoudam Manibabu Singh said, Modern College is one of the seven colleges out of the 24 Government recognised colleges which has more than 1000 students.
He added that the college has now developed its own hall, library and hostels with the funds from UGC.
It would not be easy to develop these infrastructures after shifting to another location, he added.
Moreover, Dr Manibabu added, the shifting process may hamper the academic atmosphere as semester system has already been implemented in State colleges.
Dr Manibabu also pleaded the State Government to revoke the Cabinet decision taking into account of the above facts.
