A KCP cadre suspected to be involved in extorting from transporters along NH-39 was shot dead by a team of Imphal West commandos today afternoon at Awang Sekmai.
Acting on a tip-off that some UG cadres have been extorting money from transporters at Awang Sekmai, the commando team has been on the look-out since yesterday.
As a team of commandos moved towards Olympus complex, where many hotels are located, two suspected UG cadres fled while at the same time firing towards the commandos at about 2.30 pm today.
The commandos chased them and retaliated.
In the retaliatory fire, one suspected KCP cadre was found shot dead at the outer side of the wall located at the northern side of Olympus Complex while the other is believed to have escaped towards the Makhan village.
One M 20 pistol and four RC books were recovered from the unidentified slain cadre, informed a police source.
The corpse has been deposited at RIMS mortuary.
The commando team pursued the escaped cadre till Makhan and Tejpari villages.
