To encourage businessmen to invest in North Eastern States of India, the Ministry of Commerce, Government of Thailand would be hosting 'North East Investment Week' at Bangkok starting from October 1.On the other hand, the Government of India has sought the opinions of the State Government in connection with lifting restriction on trade items in the ongoing Indo-Myanmar border trade activities.
The North East Investment Week to be hosted at Thailand's capital Bangkok by the Ministry of Commerce of that country from October 1 to 4 would be attended by officials of Indian Chamber of Commerce and many businessmen apart from Union DONER Minister Mani Shanker Aiyer and Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, an official source disclosed, adding that participation of Manipur has not yet been finalised.
'Manipur can expect a lot from the proposed North East Investment Week to be held at Bangkok but past experiences have taught us that the potential of such opportunities have never been reaped because of red tapism', Prof Amar Yumnam of Economics Department, MU said while talking to The Sangai Express.
Meanwhile, a reliable source disclosed that as a follow up to the announcement made by Union MoS for Commerce Jairam Ramesh during his last visit to Imphal on lifting the restriction imposed on trade items of the Indo-Myanmar border trade, the Centre has sought the opinion of the State Government in this regard last month.
However, the State Government is yet to respond, though necessary preparations are being made, the source added.
Another source informed that Consultant General of Myanmar at Kolkata U Soe Paing has expressed his desire to visit Moreh to a delegation of North East Federation of International Trade when the former called on him recently.
It may be noted here that the State Government has making efforts to extend bus service between Imphal and Mandalay.
