In pursuit of its demand for unconditional revocation of a case registered against office assistant of Gwaltabi-Yaingangpokpi Road Transport Association Kh Olendro, Transporters and Drivers' Council has announced a 48 hour chakka-bandh agitation from May 14.
Tomba was released on bail today by a Court where he was produced after being arrested by a commando team of Imphal West police on May 2 on charge of being a KYKL activist.
Decision to take recourse to the agitation was reportedly taken in a meeting held at the conference hall of Hotel Nirmala today which was attended by representatives of various transporter's bodies.
Speaking to newspersons after the said meeting, general secretary of the Council Ng Haridas expressed strong resentment that members or functionaries of transport organisations have to ensure harassments from Government forces on ground of extending donations to a particular NGO.
Highlighting helplessness of transport organisations due to intense pressure from NGOs to concede monetary demands, Haridas described at unfortunate transporters wedged between Government agencies and NGOs.
Opining that no transport body or individual are willing to oblige monetary demands from NGOs or armed organisation, he all made a fervent appeal to all concerned against insisting on excessive demands.
Taking into account plight and precarious situations being endured by transporters, the Council functionary also urged the Govt to be considerate in dealing with such situation.
Insisting that the agitation call is being given to protest registration of the case against Olendro, Haridas also appealed to the general public and NGOs to extend cooperation while urging all transport organisations, autorickshaw/passenger jeep/van/Tata DI operators to cease service during the agitation period which is slated to begin from the intervening night of May 13 and 14.He also took the opportunity to prevail upon the Govt on clearing pending dues for hiring vehicles during the 9th assembly elections and appealed to NGOs to hire vehicles after compliance to appropriate payments.
