International campaign against VAW launched

The International Campaign on 16 days activism on violence against women was kick started today under the aegis of Women in Governance (WinG), Manipur at Tribal Research Institute (TRI) Auditorium, Chingmeirong with the theme 'From Peace in the Home to peace in the world; Let us challenge militarism and end violence against women.
Extending solidarity and support to all women rights defenders in the State, WinG Manipur appealed to the State, concerned organisations and people of the State to end violence.
Among others, the declarations of WinG at the occasion included setting up of women PS in every district and to provide training and job opportunity to women.
Ending militarisation, to develop economic security policy for women in need like economic packages for widows whose spouses have been killed; setting up of Viscera Laboratory and Fast Track Court; to ensure women in governance; to ensure 33 percent reservation for women in VA, ADCs and State Assembly; to provide gender budget are among other points included in the declaration.
Besides, it also appealed for immediate appointment of woman member secretary in the MSCW while also urging rights activists of the State to initiate action for revival of Manipur Human Rights Commission.
Speaking at the occasion, convenor of WinG, Nonibala Narengbam stressed the need to ensure peace at home first so that it can prevail in the society.
Grace Zamnu, member of Churachandpur ADC said survival of only a male society is impossible.
As such, all concerned must respect women and their contributions and end violence against them.
President of Kuki Women's Union Rose Mangshi Haokip; Programme Exe of DDK, Manibabu Likmabam; Consultant WinG, Jane McGrory and renowned film actress, RK Hemabati have also attended the programme.
