Imphal, September 30 2016:
Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has said that Manipur University must adopt the Central Government reservation norm at its Academic Council meeting to be held on October 3 as it is a Central Government funded institute.
In a statement, DESAM said MU authority must enforce 31 pc reservation for ST candidates, 2 pc for SC candidates, 17 pc for OBC candidates while 50 pc of the seats must be declared as unreserved seats.
Stating that the agitation of the candidates who have appeared in the entrance tests of different Departments of the varsity is justifiable, DESAM said that they would extend support to the agitation unless the results of these entrance tests are declared according to the Central Government seat reservation norms.
Maintaining that the MU authority must not do anything which may derail the academic year of the students, DESAM said that MU authority must never demonstrate its incompetency by conceding to the 'illogical' demand of certain groups.
DESAM said that if there is any teacher or student who wishes to oppose MU Amendment Act 2012, they may approach other competent authorities instead of exerting pressure on the MU authority.
The students' body also urged all concerned to extend co-operation in commencing the admission process by abiding with the High Court directive passed on September 1 last.
Decrying the action of some teachers who had instigated a group of students to resort to violent activities on the issue, DESAM said that they would respond accordingly if they continue to incite the students further.
Stating that the reservation percentage of SC students is too less, DESAM said that MU Amendment Act 2012 must be amended once again.
The State Government may also rectify its reservation structure according to the population of different categories, DESAM said.
DESAM would extend support to SC students regarding the matter, the statement added.
