The 57th Manipur Kanba Numit was observed today at Irabot Community Hall, Chalou in commemoration of the September 21, 1947 Pungdongbam incident during the height of the movement launched by Jananeta Hijam Irabot against creation of a State called Purvachal by combining Manipur, Tripura, Lushai Hill Ranges (now Mizoram), Cachar and Karbi Anglong districts of Assam.
Comrade M Ibohal, a close associate of Irabot, was the chief guest, secretary of CPI Manipur State Council B Sharma was the president and Agriculture Minister P Parijat and MLA Th Tomba Singh were guests of honour of the function.
Many prominent leaders of CPI, MSC also graced the dais at the occasion.
Before the commencement of the main function, a rally was also taken out till the memorial site of the Pungdongbam incident where the people paid homage to the departed leaders.
The rally was flagged off from Yourbung Primary School by CPI leader B Sharma.
Those who spoke during function recalled the sacrifices made by Hijam Irabot during his life time for the welfare of the weaker section of the society and his movement against creation of Purvachal State.
Agriculture Minister Ph Parijat said the contribution made by Irabot for the integrity of Manipur and his philosophy of an egalitarian society is gaining more relevance now and the people are releasing it.
On the other day, Manipur Forward Youth Front observed the day as the Great March at Amurei Cinema Hall, Chalou today.
UPF president Devabrata, AMSU president Sinam Prakash, NIPCO vice president Nabachandra, MAFYF president Sapamcha Kangleipal were special guests of the event attended by leaders of many Meira Paibi Lups as presidium members.
A mass rally was also taken out from Nongada till the Chalou cinema hall to mark the occasion.
Loumi Shinmee Apunba Lup (LOUSAL) also observed the day every year as Loumi Numit.
