Imphal, December 27 2020:
Despite Chief Minister's repeated assurance to inaugurate Makru and Barak bridge by December, the construction works are not yet completed, said Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee secretary P Saratchandra yesterday.
The MPCC secretary and several members of the committee were inspecting the bridge construction sites and condition of the National Highway-37 yesterday when he made the comment.
Inspecting the sites, P Saratchandra said, "Chief Minister N Biren Singh, on October 18 last had said that the Makru bridge and Barak bridge would be inaugurated by December.
December month is ending and the bridges have not been completed yet" .
In addition to this, P Saratchandra said that N Biren Singh again on November 28 last had said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, through video conference, would inaugurate Makru bridge by December 25 and Barak bridge by January 12 next year.
The construction works had started by laying foundation stones on October 12, 2017 .
The projects are nowhere near completion.
They have been lying dormant despite repeated assurances by the Chief Minister himself to complete them in time, he added.
"Before planning the date of inauguration of the bridges, the BJP-led Government should consult the company implementing the works for smooth progress.
The Government should work with a strong political will," Saratchandra said.
During the visit, the MPCC team also inspected several dilapidated sections of the National Highway-37 (Imphal-Jiribam road) .
Many sections of the road are in pathetic condition and causing immense hardships to commuters, said Saratchandra adding that Union Minister Prakash Javadekar had announced that the road would be widened and improved.
