To do away with the earlier practice of contributing 28 tins of paddy by each farmer every year towards meeting the cost of constructing the Chakpi-Thingkaiphai Kacha Dam over Chakpi river, the dam would be now constructed with the required fund from the MLA Local Area Development Fund.
The dam has been under construction for the last many years with formation of a committee.
Every year, the farmers are contributing 28 tins of paddy each toward meeting the cost of constructing the dam, and handing over the same to the contractor concerned.
However, Sugnu Kendra MLA and PDA chairman K Ranjit has announced Rs 2 lakhs from his MLA fund towards accomplishing the task before the next cultivation.
Ranjit made the announcement among other various developmental works to be taken up while addressing a public meeting at Serou Bazar on Dec 16, on the concluding day of his four-day whirlwind visit to his constituency.
It may be noted here that the Kacha dam has the potential of irrigating over 300 paris of paddy field in Serou and Thingkaiphai area.
The MLA handed over a total amount of Rs 10,25,000 including Rs 55,000 from his own pockets to the people of his constituency for taking up various developmental works.
The amount handed over by the MLA and their corresponding works are Rs 35,000 towards meeting the cost of constructing a Kacha bridge at Kakching Khunou and school toilet, Rs 2 lakhs for constructing a new motorable road ( 2.5 kms) connecting Waikhong Maning hillock to Ihang and Rs 50,000 for repairing inter village roads in four villages of Waikhong, Rs 50,000 for construction of a community hall at Pangantabi, Rs 20,000 for ground levelling the playground at Pangantabi Mayai Leikai, Rs 70,000 for construction of a community hall at Wapokpi.
The MLA also handed over Rs 30,000 for shingling of the Tangjeng Khunjao ring road, Rs 20,000 for development of the playground at Khongyam Makha Leikai, Rs30,000 for singling the Khongyam Awang Leikai rod, Rs 20,000 for construction of a community shed at Chajing Khunou, Rs 20,00.0 for construction of another community shed at Tangjeng Khunou, Rs 30,000 for dredging Narankhong which serves as an irrigational canal in Wangoo Heinoutangbi area, Rs 15,000 for improvement of the market shed of Wangoo Lupa Marup, Rs 80,000 for construction of a community hall at Wangoo Nongyaikhong, Rs 5000 for development of the cremation ground at Wangoo Sabal.
Over and above these, he promised Rs 2 lakhs for construction of Chakpi-Thingkaiphai dam besides another Rs 1,50,000 for the purpose of strengthening the river embankment along Manipur river at Sugnu area, construction of a community hall, library and culvert all at Sugnu.
During his whirlwind tour, the MLA interacted with the people to understand their problems apart from numerous public meetings.
