The mortal remains of the champion of Meitei Mayek and former president of MEELAL Chingsubam Akaba was laid to rest today at the Wakha Chingjin of Nongmaijing Ching.
A large number of people drawn from different communities turned up for the funeral service to pay their last respect to the departed soul.
Akaba was assassinated by unidentified gunmen minutes after the New Year dawned near his residence at Soibam Leikai Mary Leirak.
The mortal remains of Akaba being laid to rest
A large number of people from across the State, including Jiribam, Ukhrul, Churachandpur, Chandel and Cacharis settled outside Manipur poured into the ground of Citizens' Club from early morning today to pay their last respect to Akaba.
Floral tributes were paid at Citizens's Club from early morning today.
A large number of MPP members, led by its president Dr L Chandramani, former president O Joy and MPP legislature wing leader Dr Nimaichand Luwang offered tributes to the mortal remains of Akaba.
The late man was advisor of the MPP and played a key role in the recent unification of all regional political parties.
Besides this, at the time of his death, Akaba was the advisor of MEELAL, president of Meitei National Front as well as president of Meitei Inat Pung Eshei Shindam Shanglen Kangleipak.
Akaba was also a former president of the Sanamahi Temple Board.
After tributes were paid at the ground of Citizens' Club, the mortal remains of Akaba was put on a Tata truck and a number of people on horse back and Thang-Ta artistes led the procession towards, Wakha Chingjin of Nongmaijing Ching.
The procession passed through Porompat Ayang-palli road, DC office road and after crossing Top and Top Khongnang Khong proceeded towards the final resting place.
A large number of people gathered by the roadside as the procession passed.
At Wakha Chingjin, devotional songs of different communities were sung and later the body was laid to rest.
