Imphal, December 01 2013 :
The Chingarel portion of NH-150 along the Imphal-Ukhrul road which breaks down very frequently is all set to be repaired in such a manner that it lasts for a long period before it requires repairing again.
Eucalyptus trees grow on both sides of the road along this stretch and it breaks down very quickly although the same portion is levelled and black topped again and again.
According to a source in PWD, Chingarel portion of NH-150 has become a big problem as it breaks down very quickly even after repeated repairing.
PWD would soon start working to bring a permanent solution to the problem, said the official source.
Elevated and depressed portions of the highway stretch were levelled and black-topped in 2007-08 but it broke down within one year.
The same portion was again levelled and black topped in 2009-10 .
Again it broke down.

PWD has now identified 860 metres of the highway section where repeated repairing gives no positive result.
As such, PWD has decided to cut the same section and make it anew.
The same section would be constructed anew with necessary funding from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in such a manner that it has several layers one after another.
At first, the soil texture and composition would be identified after drilling the earth.
Drilling and soil testing would be done by the Manipur Institute of Technology (MIT) in the next couple of days.
Eucalyptus trees growing on the road sides is also one factor for the frequent break down of the highway section.
Earlier, PWD initiated a process to cut down the eucalyptus trees but the trees spared for it turned out that they were not the sole reason.
On the other hand, the State Government prefers to re-construct the highway section without cutting down the trees.
Construction of the highway section would be started soon after identifying the soil formation.
At present, earth filling work is going between Sawombung bridge and Torbung where breadth of the highway does not reach 12 metres.
MIT engineers have been assigned to check compact level of the highway portions where earth filling is being done, informed the source.
