Nature continues to unleash its fury, over 6000 houses damaged

Imphal, April 24 2016: Apart from causing heavy damages to standing crops and vegetables, over 6000 houses have been damaged by the heavy rain accompanied by hailstorm that swept accross the State last night.

In Oinam Assembly segment alone, the violent hailstorm wreaked havoc to 3309 houses of 14 villages.

One house collapsed due to heavy rainfall and inundation by flood water while 22 other houses have been marooned by water in the same constituency.

Of around 7000 houses of the Assembly segment, CI sheet-roofs of 3309 houses were extensively damaged by giant hailstones.

Most of the affected people do not have shelter for sleeping cooking now.

Moreover, as roofs of most of the community halls of these villages also suffered major damages, there is no place for opening relief camps as well.

Numerous houses at Irengbam Makha Leikai, Irengbam Mamang Leikai Irengbam Maning Leikai, Yumnam Khunou Maning Leikai and Mamang Leikai were inundated due to overflowing of flood water from Loupal and Khujairok rivers.

In Khoijuman, vegetables and fruits were extensively damaged by hailstones.

Oinam AC MLA Dr I Ibohalbi today visited the affected localities and met the villagers.

He said that he had urged the Chief Minister to provide immediate relief to the affected people.

The MLA further said that he would extend all possible assistance to the affected people from his side as well.

He also urged the Government to release the local area development funds of MLAs soon so that he may provide immediate relief to the people.

On the other hand, heavy rain accompanied by hailstorm that lashed the State last night also caused extensive damages to over 2000 houses of 20 villages in Nambol AC.

Huge quantity of vegetables were damaged by hail- stones at Kabowakching, Balaram Khun and Senapati Sabal.

Paddy planted in around 150 paris were submerged under water after they were badly hit by hailstones.

Large number of u-morok plants planted at these areas were also damaged.

Nambol AC MLA N Loken visited the affected areas today.

He said that a detailed report of the loss suffered by the people would be prepared in consultation with the DC concerned.

He stated that the Government would provide relief to the affected people soon.

The MLA said that he would start distribution of 2000 bundles of CI sheets in consultation with the DC from today.

N Loken further said that he would start providing necessary relief materials from his side with the opening of relief camps for the flood affected people of Naorem, Maibam Lotpa Ching and Nambol Sabal Leikai from today.

Meanwhile, BJP Manipur IT Cell convenor K Robindro visited Shantipur, Kokchai and Mayang Imphal Thana today.

The heavy rainfall accompanied by violent storms that lashed the State last night damaged around 200 houses of these localities.

Affected people are now taking shelter at Kokchai Junior High School.

K Robindro assured them all possible assistance from his side.

A team of Mayang Imphal Clubs Co-ordination Committee led by its president S Mohen and general secretary Meinam Khelendra provided aid to affected people.

In Wangoi AC too, around 500 houses suffered damages.

MLA O Lukhoi inspected the loss suffered by the people of the Assembly segment today.

He said that necessary assistance would be provided to the affected people from his side and the Government.

Paddy planted in around 150 acres of Wainem Phoulen Loukon under Saitu Gampha-zol block were also damaged by the heavy rainfall.

Many houses and vegetable farms were damaged as windstorm and hailstones lashed various parts of Thoubal district last midnight, reports our correspondent.

A number of houses, cowsheds, eletric wires in Khangabok Part I, II and III have been blown away and damaged.

Many trees along the roadsides were also destroyed and uprooted.

VESCO, Khangabok has urged the State Government to provide immediate relief to the victims.

It has also been reported that around 50 houses in Sangaiyumpham Cherapur have been damaged while around 40 houses in Athokpam Makha Leikai Ward No 7 including 300 Paris of paddy fields at Chaprou Khangjing Khok Makhong were affected.

Councillor Yumnam Premabati visited the affected places in Athokpam Makha Leikai Ward No 7 to take stock of the situation.

In Wangjing, around 50 houses were partially blown away while electric wires and electric posts have been damaged.

Roofs of number of houses at Wangbal, Kairembikhok, Uyal Nongpok Sekmai, Ukhongsahang, Salungpham, Heirok, Leishangthem, Thoubal Ningombam were blown away and many kitchen gardens were damaged by the windstorm.

This morning, within a short interval, it rained four times out of which three were accompanied by hailstones.

However, haistones this morning were smaller in size compared to last midnight's.Though, houses and other properties were damaged, there is no report of injury.

Khukthar Baptist Church, Chandel district including village Aganwadi Centre, waiting shed and some dwelling houses were damaged by storm last night.

Some kitchen gardens were also damaged by hailstorm.

Strong wind accompanied by heavy rainfall was also reported at Chandel district Headquarters and Chakpikarong areas last night.

However, there is no report of damage till the filing of this report.

Several houses including Litan Primary School at Kitan village was also destructed by hailstorm.

Nine houses including village Church and youth quarter in Langkhongching Village under Moreh Block were also damaged by windstorm, hailstones at around 1 am today.

Villagers whose houses were damaged were Lr Leidong, s/o Leirung, Ks Moshilpha, s/o Angdun, DL Medun, s/o (L) Modar, Ks Moran, s/o (L) Komandi, Kt Kothil, s/o (L) Moshil, Kt Angkha, s/o (L) Moshil, Ks Angrung, s/o (L) Komandi, Lr Mophom, s/o (L) Kothil and Kt Romeo, s/o Kothil.

Many houses and kitchen gardens were damaged last midnight squalls in Bishnupur district.

At Moirang Kokilabon Leikai, a tree near Ajit Brick Indutry was half uprooted.

It then violently fell on top of the brick store room and left half of the roof to be blown away by the strong wind.

Tin roof of Bishnupur Fire Service office has been also damaged.

Incessant rainfall have also flooded Oinam, Irengbam, Yumnam Khunou, Ngakchoupokpi, Keinou, Ngaikhong Khunou, Toubul and Khoijuman.

Meanhwile, Moirang SDO Md Daulat Khan today visited relief camps in Nongmaikhong and Khordak and distributed relief items.

Lamp, tarpaulins and other items will be distributed in the relief camps tomorrow.
