Manipur's medal tally swells to four at Senior National Fencing Championship

Imphal, January 02 2025: Manipur's medal count rose to four on the third day of the 35th Senior National Fencing Championship, held in Kannur, Kerala.

The championship, which commenced on December 31, 2024, will conclude on January 3, 2025 .

The state secured an additional bronze medal on the third day, complementing its earlier achievements of one gold, one silver, and one bronze.

Manipur began their medal campaign on the opening day (Dec 31, 2024) with Laikhuram Bidyabati clinching bronze in the women's epee individual event.

Bidyabati delivered a closely contested 15-14 victory over Haryana's Lohan Prachi in the quarterfinal before being defeated 10-15 in the semifinal by Taniksha Khatri, also of Haryana.

On the second day, Manipur dominated the women's foil individual competition, adding a gold and a silver to its tally.

Waikhom Sonia Devi captured the gold medal with a commanding 15 9 victory over Haryana's Kanupriya in the final.

Meanwhile, Naorem Mina Devi settled for silver after her semifinal loss to Kanupriya, falling 9-15.The third day saw Manipur's men's foil team - comprising Laishram Tomba, Huidrom Rabikumar Singh, Kangabam Abhinash Meitei, and Khoisnam Rajiv - bag a bronze medal.

The team advanced to the semifinals but was outdone 23-45 by SSCB, settling for third place.
