MEA urges to introduce Equestrian in the National Sports University

Imphal, September 19 2026: Daljit Singh Chawdhary (Retd IPS), Vice-Chancellor, National Sports University, Imphal, visited the Manipuri Pony Breeding Farm at Lamphelpat and toured its infrastructure, facilities and various areas associated with the breeding and preservation of the rare Manipuri Pony.

During the visit, Prof Ch Priyoranjan, president, Manipuri Pony Society, recalled the sustained and combined efforts of the Manipur Horse Riding and Polo Association (MHRPA), Manipur Equestrian Association (MEA) and Manipuri Pony Society towards safeguarding the Manipuri Pony and preserving the equine heritage of Manipur.

He stated that the collective objective of the organisations extends beyond saving the rare indigenous pony breed.

It includes organising Polo Tournaments at the local, district, state, national and international levels while preserving the unique, millennia-old equine culture of the Manipuri civilisation and re-establishing the traditional equine practices at the grassroots level.

The organisations are also committed to grooming younger generations and providing them opportunities to participate in national and international equestrian events.

It was emphasised that the people of Manipur possess a natural affinity and talent for riding, which with systematic training and modern infrastructure, can be developed into competitive excellence.

N Ibungochoubi, secretary general, MEA, also renewed the earlier request for introducing Equestrian as an academic subject at the National Sports University.

Responding positively, the Vice-Chancellor expressed optimism that the University could invite the MEA and allied organisations for further consultations towards developing the proposal.

Daljit Singh Chawdhary acknowledged the enthusiasm and potential of the youth of Manipur and expressed hope that Equestrian could emerge as a medal-winning discipline, provided athletes are given adequate and sustained training at international standards.

He urged members of the MHRPA, MEA and Manipuri Pony Society to continue their selfless service to the Nation in preserving and promoting the age-old equine cultural heritage of Manipur.

The Vice-Chancellor further stated that all possible areas of collaboration�including research, academic programmes and practical training�could be discussed at the appropriate managerial platform of the University.
