Imphal, October 24 2026:
Live preparation of Korean-style kimbaps using GI-tagged Black Scented Rice, Chak-Hao, and Chak-Hao Angouba (White Scented Rice) from Manipur has been drawing huge crowds at the Bharat International Rice Conference (BIRC) 2026 opened at Bharat Mandapam, Pragati Maidan, New Delhi on Friday.
A delegation from Manipur has been showcasing the GI-tagged Black Scented Rice, Chak-Hao, and Chak-Hao Angouba (White Scented Rice), along with various value-added products highlighting the State's rich rice heritage and entrepreneurial potential.
A major attraction was the live preparation of Korean-style kimbaps using both rice varieties by a chef engaged for the event.
Visitors appreciated their distinctive aroma, taste and texture.
The naturally sticky nature of these scented rice varieties makes them suitable for preparations such as kimbap and Japanese sushi rolls.
The demonstration aimed to highlight the potential of Manipur's indigenous rice varieties in contemporary Asian cuisine and explore new market opportunities in Delhi and other urban centres.
The initiative seeks to encourage product innovation, strengthen market linkages and create additional opportunities for farmers, FPOs and local entrepreneurs.
Organised by the Indian Rice Exporters Federation (IREF), BIRC 2026, being held from October 23 to 25, provides a platform for stakeholders across the rice value chain to explore trade, innovation, value addition and domestic and international market opportunities.
The Department of Agriculture, Government of Manipur led by its Director Peter Salam is taking part in the event.
