Kakching, June 04 2025:
Kakching Municipal Council (KMC) on Wednesday carried out a cleanliness drive along the National Highway 137-A in Kakching district in connection with World Environment Day, targeting plastic waste that had clogged the roadside drains, causing frequent blockages.
The drive was participated by KMC caretaker chairperson Naorem Sanjitkumar, senior CEO Th Siddhartha Singh, caretaker councillors, sanitary workers and staffers.
Speaking on the occasion, N Sanjitkumar observed that frequent flooding in valley areas during the monsoons is mainly caused by clogged drains and obstruction of drains by plastic wastes, which not only damage the environment but also cause man-made flooding.

He also said the drive was part of a broader effort to raise awareness on the dangers of plastic pollution and to promote proper waste disposal practices among the public.
He stressed that while KMC already collects waste twice a week, many residents still dump their waste into drains and water bodies, leading to unavoidable flooding during the rainy season.
Warning that action as per the law will be taken against people found randomly discarding household waste, Sanjitkumar opined that if the residents adhere to the KMC's waste collection system, there will be no reason to dump trash in the drains.
He urged the public, shopkeepers and business establishments to make use of the waste collection service, warning that by the end of June, names of individuals or households not subscribing to the service will be made public.
Sanjitkumar further appealed to the public not to throw plastic bottles, bags or other waste into the drains to prevent flooding.
Similarly, Library and Information Centre (LIC), Kakching launched a two-day cleanliness drive around the centre on Wednesday in connection with World Environment Day 2025 .
