State Election Commission calls all-party meeting

Imphal, May 02 2015 : The State Election Commission orga-nised an all-political party meeting yesterday ahead of the election of the six Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) of the State in order to make the election a 'free, fair and peaceful' one.

The election for the 144 seats of the six councils will be held on June 1 .

The all-political party meeting was presided by Election Commission secretary Th Chitra and was held at the Commission's office.

In the meeting, representatives of various parties appealed to make ADC election free from any problem and interference and also suggested the Commission to open a nomination office at Imphal too.

The Commission assured positive response to this suggestion, and said that it would consider opening alternative centres for filing nomination papers after proper discussion with the respective DEOs and ROs.

With the polls approaching fast, political parties are ready to announce their candidates.

Congress party has held a meeting to discuss the alleged interference by NSCN (IM), which threatened and prohibited Congress party from sending out their candidates in the Naga-dominated districts of Senapati and Ukhrul.

The meeting, called by Chief Minister O Ibobi, was attended by Home Minister and Deputy CM Gaikhangam, other Congress Ministers and MLAs from hill areas.

A reliable source also said that the Congress meeting has decided to announce the list of candidates by Monday and the party would field candidates in all the 144 seats.

Congress had received 215 applications for the ADC polls.

BJP Manipur Pradesh also held a long meeting yesterday discussing the list of candidates to be send out from the party.

In the meeting that was chaired by state unit president Th Chaoba, party leaders discussed on whether to send out candidates in all the 144 seats or not, and also on the list of candidates.

A total of 317 applications had been received by the BJP, thereby causing a huge headache to party leaders as many multiple applications came for many seats.
