Imphal, June 17:
Reacting to the office memorandum issued by Higher Education Department on May 21 last, All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) has asserted that fixing 45 percentage as the minimum qualifying mark for admission to undergraduate and graduate classes is an attempt to sabotage the academic career of those students who scored less than 45 percentage.
Moreover, the office memorandum issued by the Principal Secretary (Higher Education) was in contradiction to the existing norm of fixing 33 percentage of marks in aggregate as the minimum level of learning or pass percentage, secretary of Human Resource Development of the student body Chumba Moirangthem pointed out in a statement.
While observing that fixing 33 percentage of marks in aggregate as the minimum level of learning or pass percentage means that a student who passed in the 10+2 examination in 3rd division can go on for higher studies, the student body noted that there have been instances in which such students topped in the examination in their higher classes.
So the office memorandum issued by the Principal Secretary of Higher Education in the name of rationalisation in admission to colleges is discriminatory and should be reviewed while there is time, AMSU demanded, adding that otherwise it would take up the cudgel and fight for the rights of the deprived students.
Furthermore, announcing that it would not interfere in the admission process of schools and colleges, AMSU appealed to all concerned to provide information in case anyone try to get admission by misusing the name of AMSU.
