Imphal, May 14:
The ongoing renovation works at Kangla is not appreciable as the work plan prescribed by the Superintendent of Archeology for the said work is slightly different from that of the original, alleged principal (Retd) of DM College of Commerce Dr Kumar.
Speaking to mediapersons at the Matamgi Yaikairol office today, Dr Kumar who is also a former superintendent of Archaeology asserted that objective of conservation and preservation of historically significant structures is to retain its originality but unfortunately this trend is missing in the work plan of the Superintendent of Archeology.
Describing Kangla as important, historical and sacred site for the people of Manipur, he said that the original sectional profile of Kangla's inner moat vividly reflects system of the military strategy prevalent in those days and further said that it is necessary to carry out archeological excavation prior to any developmental activity because every little piece of material of the past is valuable as it serves as the missing link between the past and the present.
He also rued that the inner moat inside Kangla is being dug up without conducting excavation works or studying the area and cited cases of exposing important archaeological remains during digging of the foundation trench of the pakhangba Temple near Nungjeng Pukhri.
