In follow up action after an agreement was signed on the Meetei Mayek issue, the SPF Cabinet today resolved on implementing the indigenous script in class I-II from the next academic session (2006-07) and release of all the detained script activists.
Shortly after the meeting presided by the Chief Minister and held in late afternoon today, Information Minister Gaikhangam informed newspersons of the Cabinet approving introduction of Meetei Mayek from class I-II with Roman script prescribed as the medium for hill district schools.
For smooth implementation of the indigenous script in the said classes department concerned had been instructed to begin transcription of Bengali script textbooks into Meetei Mayek and Roman script, he said while asserting that the process is being targeted for completion within October this year.
On completion of the transcription processes training programme of the teachers would be taken up to eliminate technical goof-up when the script is implemented for which Education Department officials have been asked to do the needful, Gaikhangam conveyed.
On some students currently pursuing Meetei Mayek at schools, he said even though the script is still not a compulsory subject at schools the Cabinet decided to order conduct of examination and allot marks to uphold the interest of those students.
The Information Minister also conveyed of the Cabinet decision to take up appropriate measure for release of all the persons detained at jails in the aftermath of the over two month long Meetei Mayek agitation demanding inclusion of the script in the school curricula by replacing text book written in Bengali script.
Other agenda discussed and approved by the Cabinet include constitution of Manipur State Rural Road Development Agency to monitor progress of ongoing road and bridge construction projects at rural areas under the PMGSY funding, Gaikhangam said.
