Assam Rifles troops were engaged in a fierce gun-battle with well armed underground element at Lungthar, located about 12 kms east of Yairipok police station this morning at around 8.Sources said that the gun-battle continued for about one hour.
Thoubal district commandos also rushed to the spot on receiving information of the encounter.
Even though casualty on either side, if any, could not be confirmed the source conveyed of finding blood stains at the spot the UGs were holed up probably indicating of some UGs suffering injuries.
Resident of nearby villages also reported seeing some UGs carrying away a wounded cadre after the skirmishes.
According to another report, personnel of the 8 Manipur Rifles successfully prevented unidentified gunmen from looting two Tata (DI) matadors near Sinam village, about three Kms from Tengnoupal this at around 8.30 am.
Source said that the gunmen fired at the two vehicles forcing them to stop but before they could loot the booty from the two vehicles, MR personnel arrived and fired at the looters forcing them to flee from the scene.
Body found: Irilbung police have retrieved a male body yesterday bearing multiple cut wounds from Khannarok Punalching which lies within the jurisdiction of the police station.
A dao presumably used in killing the man was also recovered from a spot not very far off from the site where the body was found, police source said.
The body bore severe cut wounds in the neck, back and right hand, detailed the police.
The corpse bearing tribal feature and likely to be in early thirties has been brought and kept at the mortuary of RIMS for identification and medical procedures, the police informed and added that an FIR case has been registered on the matter.
Meanwhile, the body of the 70 year old Thingbaijam Mani who was brutally murdered by some unidentified persons has been claimed by the family members today.
The corpse had been laying at the Jiribam PHC as the locals have been demanding action against the murderers.
