New Delhi, May 14:
Members of Parliament hailing from the seven north eastern States have urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to take steps to create a safer environment for girls from the region studying in Delhi, a day after the prime suspect in the rape of a student from Shillong was arrested.
A four-member delegation of the North-East MPs Forum, led by its working chairman Rishang Keishing, urged the PM to initiate steps to prevent harassment of girls from the North-East in Delhi.
The MPs had met Home Minister Shivraj Patil on Wednesday to explain the predicament of NE students, especially vulnerability of girls staying in rented houses in unsafe localities.
They also expressed doubts over whether Delhi police would be able to put in place a system to ensure foolproof security to students from the region.
This incident should be a wake-up call for the police.
Whenever such incidents occur, the police become very active, trying to track the culprits.
But there should be better infrastructure to check this menace, AGP MP Arun Sarma said.
There are nearly 20,000 students from the region in the capital.
Some of them are studying in the four universities, while the rest are either pursuing professional courses or undergoing coaching for competitive exams.
Only a small percentage of these students live in hostels.
