Imphal, May 05 2015 :
The workers of Public Works Department had opened the concrete slabs within the city areas to clean the clogged drains ahead of the Yaoshang festival in March.
However the workers left most of the manholes open.
There are veritable death traps for the pedestrians.
This reporter came across over ten open concrete slabs in the footpath between Khwairamband Market to Khuyathong.
Apart from posing a threat to the pedestrians who have to jump over the manholes these are posing health hazards to the people as the polluted air is wafting through the shops and families within the city areas.

It was also found that cabbages and other shriveled vegetables are dumped inside the manholes thereby clogging the drain water more.
The situation more hazardous during torrential rains.
The department concerned is not taking any notice of the matter.
It may be mentioned that State Public Works Department (PWD) cleaned the clogged drains using heavy machinery in Imphal area in March.
The drains at Khwairamband, Thangal Bazar and Paona Bazar are periodically cleaned by the State PWD using Cyclonic Sludge Container and De-silting Machine hired from Planning and Development Authority (PDA) .
