Exhibition of Tangkhul indigenous seeds held at Alungtang

Ukhrul for Sustainable Development (UfSD) in collaboration with Henry Martin Institute, Hyderabad organised a 1-day exhibition of Tangkhul indigenous seeds at Hunphun Luira celebration venue Mission Ground, Alungtang, Ukhrul.
At the event, Zanyo Varam, convener of UfSD stated that the exhibition was conducted during the celebration of Tangkhul seed sowing festival to promote the indigenous seeds and protect the biodiversity.
"Our community being an agrarian society, our traditional culture is related to agricultural activities.
The knowledge we acquired from our forefather about seed selection and preservation has to be upheld and practiced by all", he asserted.

He continued that seed selection is an integral component for successful farming and bountiful harvest.
Meanwhile, Yarmiwon Shaiza won the 1st position in the exhibition for preserving the highest indigenous seed in the traditional method without losing seed quality and for cultivating the indigenous crop while Mingyaola A Shimray and Risingson Raleng were placed 2nd and 3rd positions respectively.
Altogether, 20 individuals from Ukhrul town participated, and over 113 indigenous seeds were displayed during the exhibition.
