ATSUM kicks off education tour

Ukhrul, September 07 2019: With a firm conviction that the Government educational institutions need to be given a pep up so as to ensure that poor students, who are una-ble to afford cut-throat fees of private schools, can avail the benefits of quality education, ATSUM kicked off its tour to the hill districts by picking Ukhrul district as their first destination.

The inspection team, led by its education secretary Kakai Singsit, visited two Government educational institutions namely Ukhrul Higher Secondary School and Pettigrew College yesterday.

A statement issued by ATSUM informed that while interacting with students of Ukhrul Higher Secondary School, the visiting team exhorted the students to struggle unrelentingly in their academic pursuit and become good citizens of the Nation.

The team also met Lecturers of the school and made an appeal to the teaching community to work with the zeal of a missionary and diligently perform their duties in the collective march towards a good and progressive society.

Besides their customary duties of teaching, the team urged them to instill a sense of confidence among the students, inspire and motivate them.

The visiting team were shocked by the fact that even though Ukhrul Higher Secondary School (with a strength of 500 students) was included in the School Phagathansi program, the core problems of the school were excluded from the purview while irrelevant works are given prominence.

Later, the team visited Pettigrew College and conducted a meeting with students and Principal of the college pertaining to their problems.

Informing that ATSUM has taken much pain for the development of Pettigrew College, it explained that it will be a shame for all the Christian community of Manipur and particularly for the inhabitants of Ukhrul district if the College is in shambles.

As such, it earnestly urged all to contribute all they can for the betterment of Pettigrew College.

In partial fulfilment of ATSUM's demand, the State has assured to introduce B Ed course in Pettigrew College apart from Churachandpur College, it said adding that the acute shortage of teaching staff has been mitigated after the posting of nine Assistant Professors last year.

Three new teachers whose transfer order had been issued on August 22, are about to join the college.

All these materialized due to ATSUM's intervention, it asserted.

It recounted that ATSUM, on August 13, met with the State Government wherein the problems plaguing Pettigrew College were highlighted.

ATSUM had also demanded two MSRTC buses for the college which is located at a distance of 7 kms from the main town and the CM had assured that he will do the needful to address all the problems the college is facing, it asserted.

Urging the three Assistant Professors namely Md Indraman Khan, N Sunindro Singh and Ramyai Rungsung, whose transfer orders had been issued on August 22, to report immediately to Pettigrew College, ATSUM warned the department concerned not to stay the transfer order.

The team led by its education secretary, was accompanied by Simthar Jajo, Lovejoy Shimrah, AS Akhai and Matthew Maram, it added.
