Imphal, August 27 2024:
Different women organisations from the Koirengei side have demanded unconditional release of the village volunteers who were arrested from Awang Potsangbam Khullen last night.
Speaking to the media at Manipur Press Club today, Chaokhat Khongthang Apunba Nupi Lup, Awang Potsangbam Khullen president Soubam Madhabi said that they heard the report of a gunshot at Luwangsangol area last night and it alerted the village volunteers.
She was speaking on behalf of 14 meira paibi lups based at Koirengei side.
She continued that six village volunteers were arrested by State police and CRPF while they were taking rest after guarding the village at Awang Potsangbam Khullen.
Claiming that the State Government hasn't done anything to secure the lives and properties of people living in foothill areas, Madhabi added that many youths were compelled to come out and guard Meetei villages as the security forces didn't do anything.
She asked the Government to at least understand why the youth who are supposed to focus on their future take up arms.
"Who will guard us if the Government also crackdown on village volunteers amid the hostility of Kuki militants," she further asked.
The Government is not able to stop the onslaught of Kuki militants nor ensure the safety of people living in foothill areas, she said while taking strong exception to the arrest of village volunteers.
Either release the village volunteers or stop the atrocities and continuous onslaughts of Kuki militants, she said.
