Volunteers for Manipur and Legend Studio (Manipur), in collaboration with Imphal Municipality Council and its associated NGOs, CRED, Seven Security Force, TACDEF and Workers' Union Manipur, Action for Social Advancement, IP Films, students of Manipur Standard English School, Kakwa, Soraren Repertory Theatre observed the World Environment Day with a day of action today.
Supriya Shijaguru-mayum, Convenor, 5th June World Environment Day Campaign, stated in a press release that the Day of Action was performed by about 80 volunteers through a cleaning drive from Khuyathong to Keisampat from 7 am in the morning.
Wastage disposal trucks, JCBs and Tippers were used in cleaning the myriad solid waste gathered around the Nagamapal Keithel, and went on to Wahengbam Leikai and finally to Keisampat Junction.
The group then proceeded towards Yaiskul, Range area and conducted a beautification of the road divider in front of Kalimai till AOC.
Flowers saplings were planted on the road divider and the responsibility of maintaining them for a year will be taken up by Legend studio.
The group also spoke to the women vendors and the residents of the project area on the hazardous effect of plastics and stagnant solid waste being dumped especially.
Pamphlets were distributed to the commuters as well as the local residents.
Volunteers for Manipur is a group of Manipuri professionals and students spread all over the globe.
The programme was also help by Manipur Youth Congress members.
