Rich tributes paid to Manorama on 11th death anniv

Imphal, July 11 2015 : Fitting tributes were paid to the photograph of late Thangjam Manorama on her 11th death anniversary today at her residence at Bamonkampu.

Manorama was killed by personnel of 17 Assam Rifles after she was arrested from her house in the intervening night of July 10 and 11, 2004 .

The death anniversary was jointly organised by Thang-jam Manorama Memorial Trust, Bamonkampu and the Apunba Lup.

Speaking at the occasion, brother of Manorama, Thangjam Dorendro said that the AR was directed by the Supreme Court to pay compensation for the killing of Manorama.

This clearly indicated that the AR personnel were guilty.

He conveyed his desire that the guilty personnel are convicted by the apex Court.

Dorendro said that it was not the compensation amount that the family wants, but punishment of the guilty personnel and removal of AFSPA so that peace prevails in the State.

People offering tributes to late Thangjam Manorama

Coordinator of Apunba Lup, Phulindro Konsam said that Manorama was killed under the impunity guaranteed by AFSPA.

As such, a mass movement was launched demanding the removal of the Act from the State.

He said that sustained efforts should be made for the removal of such colonial laws from the State.

Phulindro rued that the Act is still in force in the State despite the recommendations for its removal by many panels including UN Special Rapporteur.

The movement for peace and security in the State should be carried on, he added.

The Apunba Lup also vehemently condemned the repressive acts of the Govt where student protesters demanding rigorous law for the protection of indigenous people of the State are met with violent confrontation resulting in the death of one student and injuring of many others.

Condoling the demise of Sapam Robinhood, the Apunba Lup also shared the grief of the bereaved family.

The lup also demanded stringent punishment against the police personnel involved in the killing.

K Muhindro, secretary of Thangjam Manorama Memorial Trust lamented that justice is not delivered even after 11 years.
