Thoubal, July 27 2025: Green Revolution Society (GRS), Manipur on Sunday planted saplings at the Anglo Manipuri War Memorial Complex, Thoubal Athokpam Koubiliya Makhong and distributed saplings to passers by, in connection with the observance of World Environment Day.

Participating in the two-day plantation drive, Khangabok MLA Okram Surjakumar noted that GRS has been campaigning for safeguard of the environment for over 12 years.

He also expressed delight that GRS, Youth Congress and local club members have joined hands in planting saplings at the War Memorial Complex.

The MLA recalled that during the Anglo-Manipuri War of 1891, a fierce battle was fought between the British soldiers led by captain Grand and the Manipur army at the said site with many making the supreme sacrifice.

Maintaining that the battle site is a place of great historical importance place, meriting proper development for the sake of the future generations, MLA Surjakumar stated that since discovery of names of the martyrs inscribed on a stone plaque erected by the British people started paying floral tributes to the departed souls.
