Imphal, July 24 2024:
Assam Rifles conducted a wreath-laying ceremony in honour of Col TS Mahil and L/Nk Kushal Singh who made the supreme sacrifice during counter-insurgency operations in Assam's Lodhi Basti.
According to a PRO IGAR (S) release, on July 24, 1994 Col TS Mahil departed the camp at 10:50 am with his escort to carry out operational tasks in Lodhi Basti.
While returning, near the outskirts of the village, his vehicle came under fire from NSCN terrorists.
Col TS Mahil sustained severe bullet injuries, and L/Nk Kushal Singh, his escort, was fatally shot in the neck and died on the spot.
Despite the efforts of the second escort to rush Col TS Mahil to a civilian hospital, he succumbed to his injuries due to excessive blood loss.
Both Col TS Mahil and L/Nk Kushal Singh demonstrated remarkable bravery, confronting the insurgents and prioritising their duty over personal safety.
They were posthumously awarded the Sena Medal for their bravery.
The ceremony commenced with the wreath-laying by the officiating commandant of the unit, who shared the story of the two bravehearts to inspire pride and honour among the ranks, the PRO said, adding that four officers, 13 junior commissioned officers, and 96 other ranks from the battalion paid tribute by laying wreaths and honouring the martyrs with a guard of honour.
