Imphal, May 24:
On the charge of detaining and thrashing people in illegal manner, 18 activists of the All Manipur Anti-Drug Association (AMADA) including two women were arrested by police today.
The AMADA activists were pulled up by a police team from their Keishampat office at about 10.45 this morning.
The arrested AMADA activists included vice-president Krishnamohon, drive secretary Meghachandra, deputy drive secretary Yangbu, women affairs secretary Sushila, publicity secretary Abe Chanu, deputy secretary sports Ayub Khan, social welfare deputy secretary Basanta, organisation secretary Shanti, finance secretary LC Naoton and office secretary Herojit.
On the other hand, according to information received by the press, the police crackdown on AMADA activists might have been invoked by the recent severe corporal punishment meted out to Laishram Kumari and Yaikhom Sanahanbi of Mayang Langjing Tamang by AMADA activists in their custody for reportedly attempting to traffic a child.
Yet, there has been no official confirmation from police.
Meanwhile, AMADA has demanded immediate release of all its activists failing which intense agitation of all sorts will be launched in collaboration with the people.
