Imphal, January 02 2010: Staff reporter, Salam Kamala of Hueiyen Lanpao is among the reporters and others related with media, who were honoured on the occasion of celebration of 28th foundation day of the evening daily Kangleipaki Meira held at Manipur Press Club, Majorkhul here today.

The awardees were selected by a jury of the daily.

Salam Kamala was conferred the best female reporter of 2009 recognizing her activities and exclusive photos as a staff reporter of the Hueiyen Lanpao.

Other scribes honoured today were Sarjan Yumnam of ISTV (best journalist-electronic-2009), reporter Sarangthem Johnson of Poknapham (best male reporter-2009), translator, P Rajen, an employee of the DIPR (best appreciated DIPR personnel-2009), social worker Kambam Satyajit (best appreciated media coordinator, 2009), columnist Kullachandra of Kangleipakki Meira (best columnist, 2009) and Pukhrimayum Santa (best hawker, 2009) .

Dignitaries present at the function, Deputy Chairman of State Planning Board, MLA Bijoy Koijam as chief guest, Commissioner (Art and Culture) P Bhorot as president, Consultant of All India Radio, Imphal, BB Sharma and Director of Agriculture, P Phalindro as guests of honour handed over the awards.

MLA Bijoy Koijam, speaking on the occasion, observed that the opinion of certain people that media should be always against the government is a false concept.

They are the eye openers of both government and people.

They should always go in balance between the two, he said.

If the government remains silent even after the media pointed out the mistakes in the policy, the great loser will be the government.

The government and the media should help each other in rectifying any mistake for the welfare of the people.

Even though, many newspapers published in the state, if they lack quality reporting, it would not be good for the state, Bijoy observed expressing disappointment over some persons possessing journalists' I-cards issued by the DIPR engaging in contract works.

Journalist as a profession needs to be patient as works are hard for them, he said while appealing to the journalists to be sincere enough and not to use I-cards to identify them in one's personal gains.

He also appealed to the scribes not to accompany those who are not their professional colleagues while attending a government function meant for the media persons.

Speaking as guest of honour, BB Sharma observed that scribes are facing hindrances while discharging their duties freely.

Senior journalist, AK Sanaton who also attended the function observed that scribes need not to go hand in hand with the government.
