Imphal, March 05 2025:
Former chief minister N Biren Singh should clarify the report carried by the online news portal News Arena India that he proposed three months of President's Rule in Manipur in his resignation letter to the Governor, demanded Khundrakpam MLA Th Lokeshwar.
Addressing a gathering at the inauguration of a newly constructed shed for Women Welfare Association, Pangei Yangdong on Wednesday, Lokeshwar said people want a government run by their representatives and not President's Rule.
As elected representatives have no say under President's Rule, people are against such system of governance, widely considered as military rule, he said.
"Without giving specific reason, N Biren resigned one day before commencement of the assembly session," he contended, stating that if Biren really loved the people of the state, he could have nominated one from among the BJP MLAs as his replacement and form a new government even in the middle of the night.
However, no such arrangement was made and the state was put under President's Rule on February 13.In the official promulgation of President's Rule in Manipur, President of India mentioned that the central rule was imposed based on a proposal of the Governor.
On the evening of February 13, online news portal News Arena India reported that N Biren proposed imposition of President's Rule for three months while submitting resignation to the Governor.
"Former chief minister N Biren Singh should clarify the report carried by the online news portal and if it is indeed true, it is unlikely that people of the state would forgive him," insisted Th Lokeshwar.
According to the Congress MLA, BJP and its alliance partners have 54 MLAs in the 60-member Manipur Legislative Assembly and they can still stake claim to form a popular government by electing a new leader.
However, BJP and its allies have failed to elect a new leader till date, which he described as very unfortunate.
