TPC's Bigyan attends human rights workshop in Bangkok

Imphal, October 17 2022: The People's Chronicle reporter Sagolsem Bigyan attended a five-day workshop on 'Indigenous People's Rights and International Human Rights Law' jointly organised by Tebtebba Foundation and Elatia Training Institute at Furama Hotel in Siloma, Bangkok in Thailand from October 10 .

Delegates from India, Philippines, Cambodia, Indonesia, Bangladesh and Nepal as well as Thailand, working in the field of human rights attended the workshop.

TPC's Bigyan was among a five-member delegation from India.

The workshop had professionals and experts sharing knowledge on international human rights law and indigenous people's rights on different days of the workshop.

United Nations Human Rights Council on Rights of the Indigenous Peoples former special rapporteur and United Nations General Assembly's Permanent Forum on Rights of the Indigenous Peoples former chairman Victoria Tauli-Corpuz spoke on 'Regional human rights mechanisms, UN bodies and institutions, international financial mechanisms, International Labour Law Convention 169 and Business and Human Rights'.

International human rights lawyer Jennifer Tauli Corpuz spoke on 'Human rights: Key concepts and terminologies, international human rights mechanisms and institutions, International Convention on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and Human Rights Council, International Covenant on Economics, Social and Cultural Rights (ICE-SCR) and its committee, and Committee on Racial Discrimination (CERD) and its committee' .

Elatia Training Institute's master trainer Eleanor Dictaan-Bang-oa spoke on 'Convention on the rights of Child (CRC), Convention on Elimination of All Form of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and their committees' .

According to Victoria Tauli-Corpuz, indigenous people are often oppressed in different parts of the world, and their values are undermined.

In such a situation, it is important for everyone to understand the rights conferred by United Nations and create awareness on indigenous communities as well, she said and expressed hope that the participants of the workshop will be more equipped to create awareness on indigenous people's rights and study issues faced by such communities.

Participants' showcased their respective indigenous cultural shows.

Certificates were also distributed to the participants.
