Imphal, March 26 2025:
Valley and Hills Labour Union Group, Manipur has urged authorities concerned to promptly clear the outstanding education benefits for labour cardholders.
Addressing media persons in this regard at Manipur Press Club, here, on Wednesday, general secretary Th Sakhi stated that the labour union, established in 2011, has been working for the welfare of construction workers and labour card holders.
The secretary highlighted that while the state government had allocated a small amount for the welfare of construction workers in 2021, education benefits were provided to only two children of labour cardholders.
Even then, despite submitting all the necessary documents, the education benefits for 2022 are yet to be disbursed, causing significant hardships for the labour cardholders in supporting their children s education, she related.
Sakhi then appealed to the authorities to release the pending medical and other benefits for construction workers for the year 2021.In addition to the difficulties faced by construction workers due to the ongoing crisis, the delay in the payment of education benefits for the children of Manipur Building and Other Construction Welfare Board has worsened their financial position, she rued.
Stating that the process for submitting the necessary documents to avail benefits for 2023 has also been put on hold, she urged the authorities to initiate steps to allow the submission of applications.
The secretary also mentioned that a memorandum highlighting these concerns was submitted to the Governor on February 21, 2025, urging him to take necessary action to ensure the welfare of construction workers and safeguard their rights.
Sakhi warned that if their demands are not addressed promptly, they will be compelled to launch intense forms of protest.
