IBSD organises workshop on mushroom cultivation

BRIC-Institute of Bio-resources and Sustainable Development (IBSD) organised workshop on mushroom cultivation for entrepreneurship development on March 26 and 27, at its Imphal facility.
As chief guest of the workshop's inauguration programme, Science & Technology secretary Kengoo Zuringla highlighted the significance of mushroom-based bio-entrepreneurship in addressing food security, nutritional needs, employment generation and start-ups in Manipur.
Speaking on the occasion, BRIC-IBSD programme chair and director (additional charge) Dr Nanaocha Sharma explained the economic potential of mushroom cultivation as a sustainable business venture along with conveying that IBSD will conduct similar training programme for improvement of socio-economic conditions of the state while IBSD scientist E and programme coordinator Dr Sarangthem Indira highlighted the importance of workshop and research being carried out at IBSD on wild mushroom and their cultivation in controlled environment.
A total of 27 participants, including aspiring entrepreneurs, farmers, unemployed youth, department officials, and students, were provided hands-on training in the cultivation of two commercially significant mushroom species: split gill mushroom (Kanglayen, Schizophyllum commune) and Shiitake (Uyen, Lentinula edodes).
The workshop, which covered innovative cultivation techniques, scientific spawn production, and substrate preparation methods for these mushrooms, was aimed at empowering participants with the skills and knowledge required to pursue mushroom cultivation as a profitable entrepreneurial venture, contributing to the sustainable development of Manipur, said an IBSD release.
