Imphal, November 21 2024:
Khundrakpam Kendra Development Committee (KKDC) has strongly condemned the recent hostage killing in Jiribam district, describing as most shocking the murder of an eight-month-old child, who was born amid the current crisis.
The committee also questioned the rationale behind the silence of the Prime Minister, who was outright in condemning the naked parade of two women.
Addressing the media at Sagolmang community hall on Thursday morning, KKDC general secretary Sorokhaibam Yaiskul accused the central government of scheming to create division in the state, by imposing AFSPA, rather than rescuing the six hostages and booking the perpetrators.
The disposition of the central government clearly indicates intention to balkanise the state, he contended.
At the same time, Yaiskul lamented the incident of mob attack on the residence of Khundrakpam MLA Th Lokeshwar.
"His residence has been a place where the displaced people came for shelter when their homes were attacked.
It is unfortunate that a mob targeted his home and burnt it to the ground," he said while adding that the attack was nothing but a politically motivated action.
He also observed that the MLA has been one of the most vocal legislators in the current conflict, who, time and again raised the issue inside and outside the state assembly for a solution.
He has also been actively involved in assisting hundreds of displaced families of the constituency ever since the crisis erupted in May last year, Yaiskul testified.
Highlighting the MLA's activities for the people and the state inside and outside the state assembly, he said that the mob, who came with petrol and firearms, not only torched the house but also set ablaze several items meant for distribution to relief camps and village volunteers which included blankets, mattresses, jackets and woollen 'phaneks'.
Apart from destroying those items, the mob also took many of them, he said, terming it as very unfortunate.
"People of Khundrakpam AC acknowledge the public sentiment and they also have the same feelings.
They would ensure that the MLA resigns from his membership of the state assembly as per public demand once the CM steps down," he added.
A two-minute silence was also observed in memory of the six children and women of Jiribam, who were taken hostage by Kuki militants and killed later.
