Jiribam, July 24 2024:
While some displaced villagers from Leingangpokpi in Jiribam have returned to their respective homes, many remain in relief camps, citing fears of attacks by armed Kuki militants.
They affirmed not to return until sufficient security measures are put in place to ensure their safety.
The displaced residents of Leingangpokpi village, currently staying in the relief camp set up at Sorok Atingbi High School in Jiribam, are reluctant to return home until adequate security arrangement is made to ensure their safety.
Speaking to reporters at the relief camp, Leingangpokpi ward member Yurembam Amita recounted that following the killing of S Sarat of Sorok Atingbi Khunou on June 6, people of Leingangpokpi, Gularthol Thong Wangma, and Gularthol Chingkhong sought refuge at Sorok Atingbi High School relief camp.
Though they are yearning to return home and vacate the school for the benefit of students, their priority is safety.
Until bunkers constructed on the hills along the 3 km stretch to Leingangpokpi are dismantled, the villagers will not feel safe, Amita said.
Amita also emphasised the need for the government to take action and provide adequate security forces to protect the villagers.
She further informed that the school's headmaster has expressed desire for the relief camp residents to relocate so that the school Could reopen.
Additionally, Jiribam SP has stated that peace has been restored and that the camp's residents may return home.
However, the villagers are sceptical of the SP's assurances, citing a recent incident of two days after the SP's visit and declaration of peace, firing broke out in Mongbung.
