MLA Khaute assures measures to control flood
Source: Chronicle News Service

Imphal, June 24 2022: Heavy incessant rain for the past many days has caused havoc and left many people displaced.

Villages along the eastern Khuga river downstream in Churachandpur's Meitei Christian Leikai, Nengthawng Veng and Kerith Veng were inundated and several homes and agricultural lands submerged.

The Khuga river that has reached the brim up to the level of the approach road to these villages is posing a grave danger and fear.

The villages' approach road in the present condition is such that it will erode further soon due to the strong river current.

Pedestrians and villagers remained stranded since many days due to the danger posed by the connecting road, which has become narrower due to erosion in the past years.

Amidst the gloom, villagers on Friday felt a sense of hope when the local MLA, LM Khaute visited these villages and took stock of the situation.

Villagers also were given immediate relief including food items.

The MLA was accompanied by district administration officials.

The said villages of Meitei Christian Leikai, Nengthawng Veng and Keirth Veng, along the eastern Khuga river downstream are severely affected every monsoon for over decades.

Every year, these villagers are affected by recurring flood and large part of their residential lands and agricultural fields have been submerged and washed away by the river.

Many patta-lands that were surveyed earlier have been submerged, forcing many families to leave their villages.

Heavy rain-induced strong Khuga river current would directly hit the eastern bank causing continuous land and spil erosion at the eastern bank, and is always a threat to the villagers.

The villages' lifeline - Inter Village Road (IVR) is the only road connecting Churachandpur Lamka Town and the said villages.

This IVR road is on the eastern bank of the Khuga river and every year huge portion of the connecting road is eroded and carried away by the river current.

Earlier, this inter-village road was motorable but now the road width has been reduced to a size of footpath.

With the spot visit of MLA LM Khaute and district officials on Friday, villagers are hopeful that their situation will improve and that monsoon will no longer cause fear and uncertainty to the residents of these villages.

Khaute assured the villagers of all possible measures to prevent the impact of monsoon every year.

During his interaction with the affected villagers, the MLA reassured that an effective measures such as anti-erosion against recurring flood is one such measure that will be taken up to control and prevent such flood damages in future.

A villager, 75-year-old Vialzakham, who has been experiencing numerous floods over the years, expressed his gratitude.

He said, "For the past many years, we have been left to fend for ourselves.

No VIPs have come to visit.

Now that the honourable MLA has visited us, we are grateful and look forward to his intervention on the issue soon".

Other villagers, especially the womenfolk, expressed their confidence in the MLA, saying that flood control and effective anti-erosion measures will be in place soon for the villages.
