Raikhan calls for talent grooming to offset shrinking public service
Source: Chronicle News Service / R Lester Makang

Ukhrul, December 21 2021: Gone are the days when public service dominated the overall employment landscape.

Today, things have changed.

Privatization of public service is the order of the day.

"The immediate fallout of this unprecedented trend of corporatisation is continued shrinking of government job avenues which is being witnessed across different states in the country.

The only way to cope with this dramatic overhaul' of public services is to groom young talents," said retired bureaucrat Wungpam Raikhan.

He was speaking as the chief guest during the inaugural ceremony of the 10th Miklang Trophy & the 1st ROSO Cup-6-Aside Soccer at KM Seth Ground in Ringui village on Tuesday.

Raikhan, who took voluntary retirement from his positioh as CPWD engineer, explained that for most parents in the past, the ultimate goal of education of their children was securing government jobs but the situation has changed nowadays.

"Today, as we all know, majority of government services are being increasingly privatised leading to a big drop in the public services," he said, adding that private job avenues are opening up correspondingly.

He nevertheless said that private job opportunities require high level of skill or employability and thus mere earning of degrees can't be the goal of education anymore.

Asserting that youths are the future of the society, he underscored the need to prepare youngsters early on in their lives.

"There is promising prospect of careers in sport, local film industry, tourism and others.

Let's start grooming the potentials of our youngsters so they will be able to make a living out of their talents.

I see this as a key to secure the future of our youngsters and our society as a whole," he exhorted.

From development perspective, Ukhrul district is lagging far behind and lacking most basic amenities such as standard educational institutions, road communication, healthcare and others.

On top of this, the overall economy of the people is in a dismal state.

"For this, we need to, have fully functional border haats in the border region like Tusom and others.

This will create trade and commerce opportunities for the locals to improve their economy," he suggested.

Stopping short of speaking about his electoral venture, Raikhan, a Naga People's Front (NPF) intending candidate for the forthcoming Manipur Legislative Assembly Elections 2022 from 45-Chingai AC, stated "Please do not take this as a political statement but I must say that if I ever get elected as an MLA, I'm committed to serve the people selflessly".

Along with hoisting the flag, Raikhan declared the 10-day long tournament in the presence of local headman Atem A Shimray, ROSO president AC Yaongam and others.

Tongou High School (THS) headmaster MK Wungkathing and Ringui Mayar Ngala Long (RMNL) president Yareishang Zimik attended the inaugural ceremony as guests of honour Meanwhile, the opening match played between Youngstar FC and Target FC ended in a 1-1 tie.

A total of five teams from within the village are participating in the tournament.
