Imphal, January 17 2023:
Hill Tribal Council (HTC), Moreh has strongly condemned the police commando personnel posted in Moreh from whom a huge consignment of contraband drugs consisting of heroin and WY tablets was seized on Monday.
The Council also contended that the incident has yet again exposed the clandestine practice of illicit business going on within the security agency.
In a release, president Victor Limthang and general secretary Mangminlien Singson stated that HTC, in support of 'War on Drugs' had been conducting anti-drug campaigns from time to time in Moreh by making appeals and holding seminars and workshops.
However, it is disheartening that the people of Moreh as a whole are being projected as dealing in drug related business by people from outside Moreh including government agencies, while the truth is far from it.
In fact, the Council is ready to cooperate with security agencies in its mission to wipe out drug smuggling from Moreh town, it affirmed.
HTC also lamented that while it has been sparing no effort in its campaign against drugs, it is very unfortunate to come across the involvement of government security personnel in drug smuggling time and again.
"What could be more unbecoming and shameful than law custodian becoming law-breaker?" it posed.
"Under the circumstances, can we expect any breakthrough in 'War on Drugs'? The authority concerned must initiate thorough investigation and ensure bitter lesson to the erring commando personnel," it demanded.
HTC also emphasised that the people of Moreh nev er wanted and had strongly protested against the posting of commandos in Moreh but had to succumb to the then government authority which promised to transfer them back from Moreh in three months.
Several years have passed since then and the government is yet to fulfil the promise, it added.
The release further appealed to CSOs to join hands in the fight against illicit drugs to make Manipur a drug free state.
