Imphal, November 21 2024:
The National People's Party (NPP), which recently withdrew support to the BJP-led government in Manipur, has warned its MLAs against attending alliance meetings without prior approval from its state or national leadership.
The party cautioned that such actions could invite disciplinary measures.
The NPP, led by Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma, withdrew support on Sunday, citing chief minister N Biren's failure to restore normalcy in the conflict-hit state.
However, the party hinted on Thursday that it might reconsider its decision if the BJP replaces Biren with a new leader capable of addressing the crisis.
"Chief minister Biren has totally failed to bring normalcy to Manipur.
That is the main reason for our national president to withdraw support.
If the BJP replaces him, there is a possibility that a new government could take steps to restore normalcy.
The NPP may reconsider its position at that time," national vice-president Yumnam Joykumar told PTI.
Despite the withdrawal of support, three NPP MLAs attended a meeting of the ruling alliance chaired by the chief minister on Monday.
Joykumar clarified that their attendance might have been due to confusion and reiterated that the NPP remains part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) .
"We have withdrawn support to the Biren-led government but remain NDA partners.
However, we have cautioned our MLAs that attending such meetings without prior approval from the state or national president may lead to disciplinary actions," Joykumar stated.
He also asked party MLAs to seek prior approval from the national president or state president for issuing official statements to the media.
