Imphal, April 15 2024:
As tensions escalate with reports of interference and violence perpetrated by armed groups ahead of the 18th Lok Sabha election, the Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) and its armed wing - Zeliangrong Tiger Force (ZTF) held a security council meeting on Friday and reaffirmed its earlier resolution to make the election free and fair in Zeliangrong and Naga inhabited areas.
In a statement, ZUF alleged that independent candidate Dr Alyson Abonmai and his team faced detention, harassment, and ban on election campaigning in Noney and Tamenglong district headquarters by NSCN (IM) cadres and UNC volunteers on April 11.Similar incidents were reported in parts of Ukhrul district, where the Congress candidate was attacked, abetting public tensions and threats to lives.
Social media circulated accounts of Dr Abonmai's humiliation and threats in Noney and Tamenglong towns, where they were denied basic services and had their flags forcefully removed by individuals claiming allegiance to NSCN (IM).
The incident has sparked outrage, with accusations of NSCN (IM) prioritising its own interests over the welfare of Zeliangrong people, the statement maintained.
ZUF condemned the actions of NSCN (IM), highlighting the contradiction between advocating for free and fair elections while engaging in violent tactics to suppress opposition.
The recent killing of ZUF joint secretary Alur Seikho, further underscores the gravity of the situation, with allegations that NSCN (IM) aims to secure polling booths for the NPF candidate through intimidation, it said.
ZUF issued a stern warning and declared their readiness to confront any further attempts at coercion or interference by NSCN (IM) arid its affiliates.
They called upon the Election Commission of India (ECI) to ensure a level playing field for all political parties and candidates, and urged swift action to safeguard the electoral process from external influences.
