Imphal, June 08:
Apart from addition of seven new departments in Manipur University, two hill campuses of the Centrally-run varsity are likely to be established soon with the University Grant Commission (UGC) reportedly giving its approval.
Such development came after the Manipur University proposed to the UGC authorities for opening seven new departments with the latter verbally assuring to initiate all necessary procedures, informed the varsity's Vice Chancellor C Amuba Singh today.
The assurance was reportedly conveyed after a five member UGC expert team in April this year assessed the University's performance during the tenth plan as well as on requirements for the 11th plan.
Regarding the hill campuses, the Vice Chancellor said, "Once these campuses are opened, arrangements for transferring some departments that are suitable to the people living in and around the proposed campuses would be effected".
The hill campuses assume significance as tribal students of MU had been demanding increase in reservation of seats upto 34.5 percent in admission as well as employment opportunity.
The seven new departments conceptualised and proposed by the MU authority for commencement in the 11th plan are said to be Sociology, Social Science, Environmental Science, Forestry & Horticulture, Rural Development, Cultural studies and Psychology.
Exuding confidence that the UGC would give its final nod to the proposals, Prof C Amuba further said 'process for opening two new departments five year integrated MSc Biotechnology and 4 year integrated Bachelor of Physical Education are already underway and most likely to be opened by the next academic session'.
Once these two new departments are established faculty strength of the varsity would also be increased to 27 from the present 25 .
